Interview. Laely Heron, nationally recognized winemaker

Sextobottle1 I discovered the wines of Laely Heron in 1998 while attending the annual conference for the Society of Wine Educators. Her inexpensive wines were among my top ten wines from thaLaelyt intensive four-day event. And now, thanks to the folks at Google Video, you can spend a few minutes listening to this talented winemaker tell how she got started in the wine business, and about her latest brand, "Sexto" (which isn't as lascivious as it sounds - get your mind out of the gutter!)

Across the globe, few women have started their own wine brand and prospered the way Laely Heron has. We explore how Laely discovered and launched her wine business, the honors she's earned, and the future of her wine brands. This is also a portrait in the passion of wine making which Laely Heron exudes throughout the interview. 15 mins   (Video courtesy of www.sfunscripted.com and Google Videos)

Sextobottle1_2 2004 Sexto - Laely's new brand!  $12.99

  1. Nose: Ahhh, the scent of an old world wine! A scented tour of the Spanish countryside, this wine captures scents of dark fruits, honey, dust, distant leaf fires, aromatic vegetation and perhap a distant farmyard.
  2. Palate: Delivers everything hinted at and promised by the nose. Don't ask me how to preserve any unfinished Sexto, I simply doubt there will ever be any.

Heron_chardsm 2004 Chardonnay, California.  $10.99

Nose: Bright and crisp, with some tell-tale pear, but enough citrus brightness to mislead an unsuspecting taster, for a fleeting moment, down the anything-but-chardonnay path.

Palate: Reveals a wine that is definitely Chardonnay, but one produced in the crisp and dry style more common to French wines from Chablis. A most pleasant 13% alcohol makes this wine great with food.

Heron_pinotnoir_2002_thumb 2004 Pinot Noir, Limoux France.  $11.99

Nose: Delicate spices and exotic aromas of strawberries, sandalwood and vanilla.

Palate: An elegant and complex Pinot Noir with a most pleasant 13% alcohol. Happiest when paired with food, this wine is still very content to take the solo spotlight.
